Do You Need a Gym for an Effective Workout? – A Fit Mom’s Experience

Working out at home can be liberating, fun, and just as effective as training at a gym. When I work out at home, I can watch a movie and laugh out loud; I never forget my intra-workout drink (the kitchen is nearby); there are no haters, judgmental onlookers, or self-proclaimed know-it-alls critiquing me from a distance. Most of all, my focus is 100% on myself. As a young, broke mom, I worked out at home for five years before ever joining a gym. I developed a six-pack for the first time a month after giving birth to my son, and a few months later, my legs were toned for the…

4 Simple Rules to Post-pregnancy Fat Loss

Pregnancy puts a woman’s body through some incredible changes to bring life into the world. As a woman’s waistline expands, it’s normal for her to get self-conscious about her figure and worry she may never return to her prepregnancy build. After delivering her child, she can be left with extra fat, loose skin, or both. But, if you’re an expecting mother reading this, don’t let that psych you out. Every year, plenty of women reclaim their prepregnancy figures (and sometimes a fitter body) through following tried-and-true principles, which I’ve condensed into the rule below, the same rules I followed to get a fitter body after having my son. Rule 1.…

    Thanksgiving Leftovers w/ Asian Twist

Below is a simple Thanksgiving leftover recipe. Actually, it’s so simple, it’s less of a recipe and more of a combination of a few ingredients that can easily be retrieved from a supermarket shelf — aside from the turkey leftovers themselves, of course. I had the meal featured in this post after 10 PM; therefore, no carbohydrates are in this meal. Remember, carbohydrates fuel activity. The body seeks carbs during physical exertion, something I don’t do at 10 PM. Eliminating carbs at night or when you’re less physically active is an easy way to avoid storage of unburned calories. Here are the simple ingredients of my late-night Thanksgiving leftover meal:…

This Month’s Like – Gymnastic Bodies Course

My initial interest in the Gymnastic Bodies’ courses began in 2015. By then, I had been lifting since I was 17 and focusing on bodybuilding. Since then, I’ve learned that while hypertrophy (muscle growth) is great, it has to be coupled with flexibility and functional movements to keep the body progressing and to prevent injury. In 2015, my nagging shoulder tightness and limited flexibility urged me to expand my exercise repertoire and try something new. I purchased the Gymnastic Bodies’ Handstand One course in 2016 and soon dropped bodybuilding for calisthenic strength and functional exercise. After ordering Handstand One, I incorporated gymnastic strength moves in my weekly training routine, three days…

Updated: 3 Rules to Push-Up Mastery

A proper push-up (knees off the floor) is a basic upper body exercise. But for many, the movement is strenuous and difficult to learn. Women especially often struggle with how taxing the exercise can be. But, believe me, performing a correct, no-knees push-up has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with discipline and dedication. Follow the rules below for progressions from beginner to push-up master, and soon, you’ll be doing advanced push-ups with ease.   Rule 1: Get off your knees Doing push-ups on your knees creates an unnatural movement pattern that makes it difficult to transition to proper, off-the-knees push-ups. Get off your knees, tighten your abs,…

    Bosu Pistol Squats

Pistol squats on the floor can take months to master, so take the time to learn that skill before moving on to bosu pistol squats. When you do decide to give bosu pistols a try, be sure to focus on form and execution, not speed. The worst that can happen is that you’ll fall. No big deal. Just get up and try again with as perfect form as possible. Remember to tighten your core to maintain good balance. Are Body Comparisons Your Doom?

I strongly believe that setting the goal to look like someone else, whether it’s just arms, legs, abs or another person’s whole body, is a doomed prospect. Everybody is unique, so setting the goal to look like another person is illogical. Life isn’t a Disney movie, you’ll never magically turn into someone else. Here are some examples of why comparing yourself to another makes no sense. Ever get your hair styled like a celebrity? Did you look like the celebrity afterward? I’m 99% sure that you didn’t. Example two: clothing. Take one look at a party of bridesmaids. They are all often wearing the same thing, but believe me, they…
